This is what I found, having removed the door jam:

The backing plate had completely sheared. The next day I went off to the scrappy & found a donor car:

Not a lot left on this car, but it did have the needed door stay. These 'brackets' quite often break over time, usually the drvers side being the one to give, as that gets most use. The donor car was a left hand drive model, so hopefully with the one I needed being from its passenger side, it should not be too worn.

And with all the trim back in place:

Normality has been restored. The door is now 'sprung-loaded' & holds in three places as it should.
